Was hat die Shooting Star auf einer Homepage über Flugzeuge des WK 2 zu suchen? Die Antwort ergibt sich, wenn man weiß, daß zwei Versuchsmuster dieses Flugzeuges im Februar 1945 in Italien stationiert waren. Sie dienten der ausgiebigen Truppenerprobung, vermieden aber jegliche Feindberührung. Um die Lockheed P-80 zu verbessern, waren folgende Arbeiten nötig: Seien wir mal ehrlich; diese uralten Airfix-Bausätze taugen gerade mal als Ausgangsbasis. Wenn man daraus ein hochwertiges Modell schnitzen will, hat man sehr viel Arbeit. Ich habe mich daher darauf beschränkt, das äußere Erscheinungsbild möglichst naturgetreu wiederzugeben. Natürlich habe ich die Kanzel durch eine selbstgemachte vacu-Haube ersetzt, habe Gurten und ein Visier eingebaut. Das wars, man kann ja wirklich nicht viel sehen. Das Seitenleitwerk wurde gekürzt, das der späteren Serienmaschinen war geringfügig höher. Die Farbgebung erfolgte im gewöhnlichen US-Olivgrün und untenrum hellgrau. Die Abziehbilder stammen vom Bausatz.

What the hell has the Shooting Star to do here, in a website dedicated to the aircrafts of the WW 2 ? The answer is ... two test-beds of this jet-propelled Fighter saw action in Italy in the February of 1945. They were tested under conditions of war, nevertheless they did not get any contact to the enemy. To optimize the Lockheed P-80, following works were necessary: Let's be honest; these antique Arfix-kits are nothing more than a base to go on further. If you want to build an excellent model with such a kit, you have to do very much work. So I decided to restrict my modelling-works to build up an exterior view as close to the reality as possible. Of course, I replaced the canopy by a self-made vacu and added harnesses and a gun-sight. That's enough, there is not really much to see, when you look inside. I had to cut off a little piece of the fin; the later production-aircrafts' ones were a little bit taller. The camouflage was done with the usual US-aircraft-olive-drab and light grey on the lower sides. The markings came out of the box.
