Um die Revell Polikarpow I-16 Rata zu verbessern, war folgendes nötig: Harte, harte Arbeit. Bei diesem alten Bausatz paßt fast kein Teil zum anderen, Innenleben gibt es praktisch nicht. Der einzig brauchbare Teil war der Motor. Aber damals war er der einzige Bausatz einer Rata in 1/72, und je schlechter der Bausatz, desto größer die Herausforderung. So machte ich das Cockpit selbst, ersetzte den Windschutz durch einen selbstgezogenen, öffnete einen Motordeckel und baute jeden Auspuff. Auch die Zündleitungen habe ich nachgebaut. Ich klebte die aufgebohrten MG an und die Rata war fertig zum spritzen - halt! Kein Spritzen. Die Rata hatte nur am Motor und um die MG Metallbeplankung, der Rest war Sperholz und mit Stoff bespannt. So nahm ich den Pinsel, und siehe da, es wurde sehr realistisch. jan, ich gebe ja zu, nicht ganz so realistisch, wie ich es haute machen würde. Aber es ist schon sehr lange her, daß ich dieses Modell gebaut habe. Das neue, ein Hasegawa-Bausatz, wird dank weiterer Erfahrung schon noch besser werden.

To optimize the Revell Polikarpow I-16 Rata following works were necessary: Hard, hard work. In this old kit nearly no part fits to any other, and I was heavy missing the interior parts. The only part really to be used was the engine. But, at that time, it was the only kit of a Rata available, and the worse the kit, the greater the challenge. So I had to build the cockpit almost scratch, replaced the windshield by a self-made vacu, opened the engine nacelle and scratch-built the exhaust pipes. I also imitated the ignition wires. Adding the drilled-up guns, and the "rat" was ready to airbrushing - stop! No airbrushing. The Rata had only metal-sheets around the engine and the guns, the rest was plywood and cloth-covered. So I took the brush and, look, very realistic. Yeah, I admit, it beacme not so realistic, as I would do it nowadays. But a really long time passed since I had built this kit. The new one, a Hasegawa kit, will become better, thanks to more an better experence.
