 Der englische Boulton Paul Defiant war der wohl seltsamste einmotorige Kolbenmotorjäger des WK 2, was seine Bewaffnung betrifft. Mit seinem Vierlingsturm war ihm auch, bis auf ein paar Überraschungsergebnisse, kein wirklicher Erfolg beschieden, weshalb er sehr bald zum Nachtjäger umgerüstet wurde. Viele Maschinen beendeten ihre Karriere als Zielschlepper. Um die Airfix Defiant zu verbessern, waren folgende Arbeiten nötig: Alles! Es gab keinen Kunstgriff, den ich auslassen konnte. Das ist auch der Grund, warum die Bewertung des Bausatzes miserabel ausfiel - es stimmt eigentlich nichts daran. Von Qualität kann man hier nicht mehr sprechen. Mithilfe des Pavla-Bausatzes und guter Unterlagen ging es dann voran, aber Besonderes wird auch von Pavla nicht geboten. Hier der Reihe nach die notwendigen Änderungen: Ich begann, die Motorhaube, Querruder und das Leitwerk in die richtige Form zu bringen. Vierlingsturm und Inneneinrichtung wurden komplett selbst gebaut. Die Kanzeln stammen vom Pavla-Bausatz. Fahrwerksschacht und -verstrebungen wurden selbst gemacht. Die Räder sind vom Pavla-Bausatz. Beide Kühler wurden geändert und mit Struktur versehen. Die Positionslampen wurden aus klarem Plastik neu gemacht, sowie die Landescheinwerfer aufgebaut. Schließlich wurde noch der Propeller ersetzt, neue Auspufreihen vom Pavla-Bausatz angefügt und sämtliche Radar-Antennen aus Kupferlitze in Handarbeit gefertigt. Die nachtschwarze Bemalung war das kleinste Problem und iat auch recht gut gelungen. Kleiner Wermutstropfen: Die Kennung gehört eigentlich zu einer Defiant Mk I NF ... aber wer ist schon perfekt? |
 The British Boulton Paul Defiant was the most unusual single-piston-engined fighter aircraft of WW2, related to it's armament. With it's four-gun turret-equipment this aircraft missed the real success as a fighter, except of some surprising-effects, so this aircraft soon was turned into the night-fighter role. Many of these aircrafts finished it's career as a target-towing aircraft. To optimize the Airfix Defiant, following works were necessary: There was to do everything! No tricky artifice could be left. That's the reason, why the kit's ranking is rotten - there is not anything right in it. It is impossible to find any kind of quality. Thanks to the kit of Pavla und my digest of documents and datas, I was going further. But the Pavla-kit is nothing especially, too. Following the necessary changes one by one: I began correcting the shapes of engine-cowling, ailerons and tail unit. Interior and turret were completely scratchbuilt, The canopies are of the Pavla-kit. The undercarriage-bay and the main-landing-gear's push-rods were scratchbuilt. The wheels are the ones of the Pavla-kit. Both, the oil- and the water-cooler were corrected in shape and got a structure. The position lights were done with clear sprue, the landing lights cut out and newly built. Finally i replaced the propeller, added new exhaust-pipes of the Pavla-kit and the entire radar-antennas were self-made of copper-wires. But there is a minor blemish; in fact the codes belong to a Defiant Mk I NF ... but, tell me, who is perfect ? |
